On the evening of July 15, 2023, at approximately 10:48 p.m., the Stokes County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of a shooting at 311 Tavern, located at 1137 North Main Street in Walnut Cove, North Carolina. Upon arrival, deputies discovered 37-year-old Benny Anthony Cañez lying in the parking lot with gunshot wounds. Emergency medical services transported him to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Originally from Tucson, Arizona, Benny was born on July 18, 1985. He was known for his vibrant personality and warm smile. In his early years, Benny pursued a career as a DJ, sharing his passion for music with many. He later became a skilled barber, making a difference in the lives of his clients. Benny was deeply committed to his family, especially his sons, Benny Jr. ("BJ") and Kortez. He was known for his selflessness, often donating free haircuts to neighborhood children and offering support to family members in need. An adventurer at heart, Benny enjoyed outdoor activities like fishing and cherished long drives in his Cadillac, affectionately named "Bertha."
In the aftermath of the shooting, the Stokes County Sheriff's Office initiated an investigation, collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses to determine the circumstances leading to Benny's death. As of the latest available information, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified. A visitation service was held in Benny's honor on July 29, 2023, at Martinez Funeral Chapels in Tucson, Arizona. He is survived by his sons, BJ and Kortez; his sister, Josephine; brothers, Sergio, Alex, Sonny, and Julian; half-brother, Taylor Anderson; and parents, Soraida "Yvonne" Cañez, Dwayne W. Henderson, and Michael and Judi Anderson, along with 22 nieces and nephews. Benny's legacy of love and compassion continues to live on through his family and friends, who remember him for his infectious spirit and the joy he brought into their lives.
