On August 18, 2023, 60-year-old Lori Annette Kane was found deceased in her residence on Baileys Chapel Road in Advance, North Carolina. Deputies from the Davie County Sheriff's Office responded to a welfare check at her home around 6:15 a.m. Upon arrival, they forced entry into the house and discovered Kane's body in the bedroom, the victim of an apparent gunshot wound. A weapon was recovered at the scene.
The initial 911 call was placed by 53-year-old Dwayne Gregory Doby, who had been residing with Kane for approximately three weeks. Family members indicated that Kane had allowed Doby to stay at her residence to help him get back on his feet. Doby was on federal probation at the time, with a criminal history that included involvement in a 1992 murder in Winston-Salem, where he served as a driver in the crime. His testimony against a co-defendant led to a reduced charge of second-degree murder, resulting in a 10-year sentence, of which he served three years. Subsequent offenses included possession of a firearm by a felon, narcotics charges, and being a habitual felon, for which he served 52 months of a 78-month sentence.
Following the discovery of Kane's body, the Davie County Sheriff's Office, with assistance from the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) and the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office, identified Doby as the primary suspect. He was located at a friend's house in Rural Hall and surrendered to authorities after the residence was surrounded by local officers and the SBI's criminal apprehension team. Doby was arrested on a warrant for murder and is currently being held without bond at the Davie County Detention Center. His first court appearance was scheduled for the following Tuesday.
