On August 20, 2023, at approximately 6:15 p.m., Greensboro police responded to a reported shooting in the 3700 block of Lakefield Drive. Upon arrival, officers discovered 19-year-old Darnell Luther Hamilton suffering from a gunshot wound. Hamilton was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries the following day.
Following an investigation, on October 2, 2023, Greensboro police arrested 22-year-old Ja'quan Karieg Cobbs in connection with Hamilton's death.
Cobbs was charged with first-degree murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and possession of a stolen firearm.
The arrest brought some closure to the case, which had been under active investigation since the August shooting. Authorities have not publicly disclosed further details regarding the motive or circumstances leading up to the incident. The community continues to mourn the loss of Hamilton, whose life was tragically cut short.
