On the evening of October 10, 2023, 22-year-old Kai Jua Hall was fatally shot at a 7-Eleven gas station on Pavilion Boulevard in Charlotte, North Carolina. The incident occurred around 10:00 p.m. An argument erupted between Hall and other individuals, escalating into violence that resulted in Hall being shot. The commotion caused panic among customers inside the store and those refueling their vehicles, leading many to flee the scene hastily.
Emergency responders arrived promptly, but Hall was pronounced dead at the location.
The following day, October 11, 2023, detectives from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) Homicide Unit identified and apprehended two suspects: 23-year-old Deandre Spencer and 19-year-old Dillon Spencer. Both were charged with Hall's murder. Additionally, Deandre faced an extra charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. After their arrest, the suspects were interviewed at the Law Enforcement Center in Uptown Charlotte before being transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office.
The investigation into Hall's death remains active and ongoing. CMPD continues to seek information from the public to piece together the events leading up to the shooting. In the wake of this tragedy, Hall's family and friends remember him as a charismatic individual with a passion for football, having played as a tight end and fullback during his school years. He graduated from West Charlotte High School in 2019 and earned a full scholarship to Livingstone College. Hall was also a father; he welcomed his son, Ian Hayes Hall, in November 2022. His untimely death has left a void in the lives of those who knew and loved him.
