On November 20, 2023, 24-year-old Ethan Lewis Hahn of Hildebran, North Carolina, tragically lost his life in a hunting accident near Adventist Circle in Morganton. Ethan was hunting with his father, Mark Hahn, in the Pisgah National Forest when he apparently slipped on a steep, leaf-covered trail. This fall caused his firearm, a .243 CVA Scout, to discharge, resulting in a fatal gunshot wound to his upper right arm.
Despite his father's immediate efforts to administer first aid and CPR, Ethan was pronounced dead at the scene by responding authorities.
Ethan was a distinguished individual, having graduated as valedictorian from East Burke High School in 2017. He furthered his education at Appalachian State University, earning a bachelor's degree in computer science summa cum laude. At the time of his passing, he was employed as a software engineer at ECRS. Ethan was deeply involved in his faith, being a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church in Boone and attending East Valdese Baptist Church locally. He participated in numerous mission trips and was preparing to travel across the United States to spread his religious beliefs on college campuses.
The Burke County Sheriff's Office and the North Carolina Wildlife Resource Commission conducted an investigation into the incident and determined that no foul play was involved. The tragic event has been classified as an accidental shooting, and no charges have been filed. Ethan's unexpected death has left a profound impact on his family, friends, and the local community, who remember him for his academic achievements, professional contributions, and unwavering commitment to his faith.
