On August 7, 2024, at approximately 4:30 a.m., the Halifax County Sheriff's Office responded to a reported shooting at a residence on Mary's Chapel Road in the Scotland Neck area. Upon arrival, deputies and detectives discovered the bodies of 53-year-old Desiree Lynne Bass and a 54-year-old male, both deceased from apparent gunshot wounds.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the incident was a murder-suicide, with the male individual identified as Ms. Bass's estranged spouse.
The North Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence lists Ms. Bass among the victims of domestic violence homicides in 2024, indicating that she was killed by her estranged spouse, who then took his own life.
Ms. Bass, born on January 24, 1971, in Chesapeake, Virginia, was the daughter of Dreama Barfield Barnes and David Ray Barnes. She is survived by her three children: Lindsey Welbaum of Raleigh, Chandler Bass of Halifax, and Corey Bass of Halifax; her brother Shannon Barnes of Cape Carteret; her sister Davina Libbey of Halifax; and other extended family members. A celebration of her life was held on August 16, 2024, at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina.
The Halifax County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding this tragic event. Sheriff Tyree Davis has stated that the investigation is ongoing, and further details will be released as they become available.
