In the autumn of 2020, a 56-year-old woman named Sean Macklin disappeared from her Atlanta, Georgia, apartment, sparking a chain of events that would ultimately lead to a murder conviction, even without the discovery of her body. Her daughter, deeply concerned after not hearing from her mother for five days, filed a missing persons report on November 10, 2020. She immediately pointed investigators toward her mother's live-in boyfriend, Anthony Bernard Stokes, a maintenance worker at their apartment complex on Logan Street.
The daughter's fears were not unfounded. She informed the police that Stokes had a history of threatening her mother, chillingly stating that he would kill her and dispose of her body in such a way that it would never be found. When initially questioned, Stokes claimed that he and Macklin had been having relationship problems and that she had announced her intention to move out on November 7. He said he last saw her on November 6. However, inconsistencies in his story and mounting circumstantial evidence began to paint a grim picture of what had transpired within the walls of their shared apartment.
Investigators learned that Macklin, a dedicated employee at Piedmont Hospital in LaGrange, had uncharacteristically missed three days of work starting on November 5. The investigation into her disappearance soon turned into a homicide case. Although her body was never located, prosecutors built a compelling case against Stokes. Surveillance footage from the apartment complex proved to be a critical piece of the puzzle. The video showed Stokes attempting to cover a security camera before driving his truck into a position where the bed was empty. A short time later, he was seen driving away with a large cardboard box in the back of the truck, a box that prosecutors argued was large enough to contain Macklin's body.
Further evidence came from a recording of an argument between Stokes and Macklin in their bathroom on the day she was last seen. This, combined with the discovery of significant amounts of her blood in that same bathroom, created a powerful narrative for the prosecution. Additional surveillance video from a Walmart in Riverdale captured Stokes purchasing new clothes and discarding a bundle, which prosecutors contended were the clothes he wore when he killed Macklin and disposed of her remains. On December 16, 2020, Anthony Bernard Stokes was arrested and charged with the murder of his girlfriend.
During the trial, the prosecution team from the Fulton County District Attorney's office methodically presented the array of circumstantial evidence they had gathered. They highlighted Stokes's history, noting that he was on parole for the 1992 murder of a roommate at the time of Macklin's disappearance. Despite the absence of a body, a challenge the prosecution acknowledged, the jury was convinced by the evidence presented. In October 2023, Anthony Bernard Stokes was convicted of the murder of Sean Macklin. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, bringing a measure of justice to Macklin's family, who were left to grieve without the closure of laying her to rest.
