In the late hours of an April evening in Oswego, New York, a verbal dispute tragically escalated, leaving a local man dead and another facing a murder charge. On April 25, 2024, 31-year-old Nathan C. Goodway, a male resident of Oswego, was fatally shot. The incident occurred at approximately 11:43 p.m. at a residence on East 10th Street. When officers from the Oswego Police Department arrived at the scene in response to an assault complaint, they found Goodway with a gunshot wound to his torso. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to an argument between Goodway and another individual. Authorities identified 21-year-old Jaiwann D. Watson of Syracuse as the alleged shooter. According to police, Watson shot Goodway during the altercation and then fled the area before law enforcement arrived. A brief vehicle and foot pursuit ensued, culminating in Watson's apprehension by officers from the Fulton Police Department in the neighboring city of Fulton. A second suspect connected to the incident was also taken into custody, though further details about this individual were not immediately made public.
Following his arrest, Jaiwann D. Watson was charged with a string of serious felonies, including second-degree murder, first-degree burglary, first-degree robbery, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, and criminal possession of a firearm. He was processed and subsequently held for arraignment in Oswego County CAP Court on April 26, 2024. While the investigation into the motive behind the fatal argument is ongoing, police have stated that they believe this was an isolated incident and that there is no further threat to the public.
Nathan C. Goodway was born in Syracuse and had attended Oswego schools. He worked in the construction industry. He is survived by his parents, four brothers, and his longtime girlfriend. A celebration of his life was held in early May 2024.
