On the night of March 31, 2023, tragedy struck in the 400 block of South 5th Street in Festus, Missouri. Officers from the local police department were dispatched to the scene around 11:30 p.m. following reports of a disturbance. Upon arrival, first responders discovered a 41-year-old White female, Diana M. Hall, lying unresponsive. Despite immediate efforts to save her life, she had sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation revealed that Hall, a
resident of nearby De Soto, had been involved in a physical altercation with another individual prior to the shooting. A 40-year-old woman present at the scene allegedly admitted to firing the weapon that killed Hall. This individual told authorities that she had discharged the firearm because she was being assaulted by Hall during their confrontation.
Law enforcement officials took the 40-year-old woman into custody immediately following the incident for questioning regarding the events that led to the homicide. After providing her statement claiming self-defense against the assault, she was released pending further investigation. Detectives continued to review evidence, including video footage of the altercation, to determine if criminal charges were warranted. As of the last available reports, no formal charges had been filed against the shooter, and the case remained under review by the Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office to assess the validity of the self-defense claim.
