In the late hours of a Wednesday evening in July 2018, 33-year-old Brice Turner was taken into custody by the Woodstock Police Department. He was transported to the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center, located in the metro Atlanta area, arriving at approximately 11:15 p.m. Turner was facing charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of less than an ounce of marijuana, and an improper lane change. An additional charge of crossing guard lines with drugs was also brought against him.
Upon his arrival at the detention center, Turner was placed in a holding cell by himself. However, during the booking process, it became apparent that he required medical attention. His health began to decline rapidly, and despite the administration of lifesaving efforts by deputies and medical staff, his condition worsened.
A little less than two hours after his arrival at the jail, at approximately 1:04 a.m. on Thursday, an ambulance was called to transport Turner to Northside Cherokee Hospital. Tragically, shortly after his arrival at the hospital, Brice Turner was pronounced dead. The suddenness of his death while in custody prompted an immediate investigation. As is standard procedure for any in-custody death in Georgia, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was tasked with looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident. An autopsy was scheduled to be performed by the GBI Crime Lab to determine the official cause of Turner's death.
