In the summer of 2023, the life of 22-year-old James “JJ” R. Griffin III was tragically cut short in a shooting that occurred in Roanoke, Virginia. A Black male, Griffin was known by friends and family for his infectious smile and was remembered as a loving young man with a promising future. He was a graduate of William Fleming High School and was studying sports medicine in college.
On the evening of July 10, 2023, Roanoke Police responded to a shooting on Sigman Road Northwest. At the scene, they found that Griffin had been fatally shot, and another individual had sustained injuries. In the immediate aftermath of the incident, two people were taken to the police station for questioning as investigators began to piece together the events that led to the deadly encounter.
Following an investigation into the shooting, an 18-year-old male was arrested and subsequently charged with the murder of James Griffin. While an arrest has been made, Griffin's father, James Griffin Jr., has publicly expressed his belief that more individuals were involved in his son's death and should be held accountable for their actions. He feels that the justice system should pursue serious prosecution against all those he believes were accomplices to the crime. The case continues to move through the court process.
