On a warm spring evening, what was meant to be a night of youthful fun and excitement at the Mt. Trashmore carnival in Virginia Beach turned into a scene of tragedy and loss. On May 25, 2024, Jeyani Renee Upshur, a 15-year-old Black female, was fatally struck by a stray bullet when gunfire erupted in the chaotic moments outside the carnival grounds just before 8:30 p.m..
