In the quiet community of Scranton, South Carolina, the life of 11-year-old Brentlee Eugene Crump was tragically cut short on Wednesday, April 17, 2024. A fifth-grade student at Scranton Elementary School, Brentlee was known for his good manners and his love for the outdoors, often spending his time hunting and fishing. He was an active young boy, also playing for the O'Zone baseball team in the nearby town of Coward.
On that Wednesday, the young boy was with his uncle, William Glen
Richburg, at a residence in Scranton. According to reports from the Florence County Sheriff's Office, the incident was described as a tragic accident. Richburg had reportedly fired a shotgun at a tree. Afterwards, while holding the weapon by his side, the shotgun discharged for reasons that remain unclear. The projectile struck Brentlee, inflicting a fatal wound.
The sheriff's office launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the boy's death. At the time of the initial reports, the shooting was being treated as unintentional. Authorities stated that an autopsy would be conducted to determine the precise cause of death.
