In the small town of Willacoochee, Georgia, a mystery began to unfold in the late fall of 2016 that would leave a family heartbroken and a community searching for answers. On the night of November 5th, 18-year-old Kiree Hersey, a Black male, was last seen walking in the area. It was shortly before midnight, and he was dressed in black jogging pants, a white shirt, and a pair of white and black shoes. After that night, he vanished without a trace, leaving his loved ones in a state of desperate uncertainty.
For three long months, the search for Kiree continued. The community held onto hope that he would be found safe. However, on February 10, 2017, those hopes were tragically dashed. The skeletal remains of a body were discovered on the side of Charlie Harper Road in Willacoochee. The remains were later identified as those of Kiree Hersey. An autopsy would reveal that the young man had suffered from gunshot wounds, and his death was ruled a homicide.
In the wake of this devastating discovery, law enforcement officials began an intensive investigation into Kiree's death. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation, in conjunction with the Atkinson County Sheriff's Office and the Willacoochee Police Department, worked to piece together the events that led to his murder. Despite their efforts, no suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made in the case. The investigation remains open, and Kiree Hersey's death is considered a cold case.
To encourage anyone with information to come forward, a $3,000 reward was offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for Kiree Hersey's death. The reward was a combined effort from the office of the Governor of Georgia, the Atkinson County Sheriff's Office, and the Willacoochee Police Department. Authorities continue to urge the public to share any details they might have, no matter how insignificant they may seem, in the hopes of one day bringing justice to Kiree Hersey and his family.
