In the early morning hours in Atlanta, a 26-year-old man named Anthony Freeman was fatally shot in what police described as an armed robbery. The incident occurred in a small lot in the 500 block of Whitehall Street. Originally from Detroit, Michigan, Freeman had moved to Atlanta about three years prior and had been temporarily laid off from a moving company.
He had been looking forward to returning home for Christmas.
Just before the shooting, Freeman and a friend had left the Blue Ivory Club. They were in their car when they were robbed of a significant amount of cash. When Freeman got out of the driver's side of the vehicle to confront the assailant, he was shot and killed. The gunman then fled the scene in a white four-door sedan, possibly a Chevy Impala, which had apparently followed him to the location.
In the wake of the shooting, Atlanta police released surveillance video to the public in the hopes of identifying the person responsible. The video captured the suspected shooter in the two hours leading up to the incident. It showed him getting out of the passenger side of a white sedan in a nearby parking lot before walking down Whitehall Street. Authorities appealed to the public for assistance, asking anyone who might have seen something inside or outside the club to come forward, as there was no video of the suspect inside the establishment. They also expressed a desire to speak with the driver of the white sedan.
