In the early hours of April 21, 2024, the community of Shubuta, Mississippi, was shaken by the violent death of 31-year-old Trey Clark. A Black male, Clark was fatally shot following an altercation at a residence on Waller Ridge Road shortly after 4:00 a.m. He was privately transported to Wayne General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead from a shotgun wound.
The events leading to the fatal shooting reportedly began with a fight at the residence.
Following the initial dispute, two men left the scene while two others, including Clark, remained. One of the men who had left subsequently returned and shot Clark. The investigation quickly pointed to 28-year-old Zachary Marquis Brunson as the alleged shooter.
Later that same day, law enforcement made two arrests in connection with the homicide. Courtney Nicole Brunson, 31, was apprehended at 5:29 p.m. while reportedly attempting to flee on Waynesboro-Shubuta Road. She was charged with accessory before the fact, accused of driving her husband, Zachary, to the location and waiting for him. About an hour after his wife's arrest, Zachary Marquis Brunson turned himself in to the authorities and was charged with first-degree murder. Both cases are expected to be presented to a Wayne County Grand Jury.
