Tatyanna P.M. Zech, a 20-year-old female, had recently moved back to her hometown of Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin, from Chicago, seeking a fresh start and a life away from big city violence. Only two weeks after her return, on the evening of May 7, 2023, her life was tragically cut short. She was at the Maplewood Commons apartment complex and was simply taking out the trash after a family cookout when gunfire erupted in the parking lot.
An innocent bystander, Tatyanna was struck by a bullet and later died at St. Agnes Hospital.
The shooting was the result of a dispute between multiple individuals. Security footage from the apartment complex captured the chaotic scene. The intended target of the shooting was believed to be an 18-year-old man who was involved in a confrontation with the shooters. He was wounded in the exchange. Two other people who were inside their apartments were also struck by stray bullets, a 49-year-old man and his 18-year-old son.
Investigators quickly identified two primary suspects in the shooting, 14-year-old Parise Larry and 17-year-old Antonio Johnston. Despite their ages, both were charged as adults with first-degree intentional homicide and other felonies. Larry turned himself in to the authorities a few days after the incident. Johnston, however, fled the area and remained at large for four months before being apprehended in Chicago by U.S. Marshals in September 2023.
The legal process for both individuals moved forward. Antonio Johnston pleaded guilty to first-degree intentional homicide and eight other counts. Parise Larry's case went to trial, and in October 2025, a jury found him guilty of multiple charges, including first-degree intentional homicide. The incident was described as possibly gang-related, with Larry and Johnston allegedly being members of one gang and the intended target a member of another. Two other individuals, Adamite Willey, 17, and Lamarion Moore, 19, were also later charged with attempted homicide in connection to a retaliatory shooting.
