On May 25, 2023, Corby J. Neef, a 54-year-old Caucasian male from Pardeeville, Wisconsin, was found deceased at the Bunker Hill Campground in Cazenovia. His death was the result of multiple gunshot wounds. The grim discovery was made by his wife, Marsha Neef, who found him lying face down next to the camper belonging to her brother, David Harp.
The preceding evening, Corby Neef, his wife, and her brother had been drinking together at the campground.
Marsha Neef later stated that she had gone to bed around 10:30 p.m. due to being intoxicated and had heard nothing during the night. She mentioned that her husband would often sleep elsewhere in order not to disturb her. The following morning, when she could not find him in their camper or vehicle, she discovered his body.
The investigation into Corby Neef's death led to the arrest of his brother-in-law, David A. Harp of Baraboo. Harp was charged with second-degree reckless homicide in connection with the shooting. According to the criminal complaint, Harp admitted to being intoxicated on the night of the incident and claimed to have no memory of shooting Neef. Authorities found a handgun in Harp's camper, and shell casings found near his vehicle matched the live rounds in the weapon.
During the subsequent trial, Marsha Neef, who had previously worked as a 911 dispatcher, testified about discovering her husband's body. It was noted in court that she remained calm during her 911 call, which she attributed to her training and the need to relay information clearly to the dispatcher. The trial also heard that no usable fingerprints were found on the murder weapon. David Harp's charge was initially first-degree reckless homicide before being amended to second-degree reckless homicide.
