Mikayla Lynn Rogers was a 25-year-old White woman who was born and raised in Madison, Wisconsin. Known to friends and family as “Kayla,” she graduated from LaFollette High School in 2017 and went directly into the workforce. For the last four years of her life, she worked at Amazon in Madison, where she had been promoted to Process Assistant Manager. Though she worked the third shift, she always made time for fun with her friends and coworkers.
Her family remembered her love for Disney movies, especially “The Little Mermaid,” and the character Eeyore. She enjoyed adventures, whether they were trips to the Dells and Chicago or just evenings downtown in Madison.
On August 16, 2024, Mikayla’s life was cut short by an act of gun violence in Madison. A GoFundMe page established for her family stated that she “lost her fight with domestic violence.” News sources reported that a man told police he killed her because she laughed and would not apologize.
In the wake of her death, a man was taken into custody. The community rallied around Mikayla’s grieving family, donating to a fundraiser to help them celebrate her life. In her obituary, her family suggested that memorial donations could be made to the Dane County Humane Society or to Domestic Abuse Intervention Services (DAIS), reflecting both her life and the tragic circumstances of her death.
A suspect was arrested and charged in connection with Mikayla’s homicide. The case is currently proceeding through the court system. Her family wrote that she will be deeply missed and that they believe she is now their guardian angel watching over them.
