On August 30, 2024, 21-year-old Kara Welsh, a senior at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and a national champion gymnast, was fatally shot in an off-campus apartment in Whitewater, Wisconsin. The incident occurred around 11:54 p.m. at an apartment located in the 100 block of West Whitewater Street. Police responded to reports of a shooting and found Welsh deceased with multiple gunshot wounds.
