On September 4, 2023, 53-year-old John Velas was found fatally shot during his morning walk in Elmer Thomas Park, Lawton, Oklahoma. Days prior, Velas had informed police of a potential threat to his life, alleging that his estranged wife, 52-year-old Susen Hunter, had attempted to hire someone to kill him.
