In the quiet town of Pryor, Oklahoma, a place where visitors often pass through for work, a grim and unforeseen tragedy unfolded on the evening of July 21, 2024. Aaron Gonzales, a 40-year-old Hispanic man from Mexico, was in town for a job, staying at the Econo Lodge Motel. His night, and ultimately his life, was cut short in what authorities have described as a random and senseless act of violence.
At approximately 9:30 PM, the calm of the motel was shattered by the sound of gunfire.
Officers from the Pryor Creek Police Department were dispatched to the scene, where they discovered Gonzales suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body. Despite the immediate response and efforts to render aid, his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The initial shock of the event quickly turned into a determined investigation as police began to piece together the events of that night. Witnesses were able to provide a description of the suspect's vehicle, a crucial piece of information that would soon lead to a significant break in the case.
Based on the witness accounts, law enforcement was able to locate the suspect's car and conduct a traffic stop. The driver, identified as James Leroy Jackson, was taken into custody without incident. A search of his vehicle revealed a small arsenal of weapons, including three pistols, an AR-15, and a loaded shotgun. Jackson was subsequently booked into the Mayes County Jail on a charge of first-degree murder.
Investigators have found no evidence to suggest that Jackson and Gonzales knew each other, reinforcing the belief that this was a tragically random encounter. It is believed that Jackson had come to the motel looking for a friend and had been calling out a name when he came across Gonzales. The Pryor Police Chief noted that a review of Jackson's social media history indicated potential mental health issues. The case has since been turned over to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation for further handling as the community of Pryor is left to grapple with the shocking and senseless loss of a life.
