On April 17, 2023, a tragic incident occurred in East Wenatchee, Washington, resulting in the death of 23-year-old Elias A. Mora-Ontiveros, a resident of Rock Island, WA. The events unfolded when a car driving down Grant Road flagged down a Douglas County Deputy early Monday morning. Upon approaching the vehicle, the deputy discovered Mora-Ontiveros, a male passenger, suffering from a gunshot wound.
Deputies and East Wenatchee Police Officers immediately provided medical care to Mora-Ontiveros before transporting him to Central Washington Hospital. Despite their efforts, he succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. Investigations revealed that Mora-Ontiveros had sustained the gunshot wound following a verbal argument near the 10-block of South Union Avenue.
As the investigation progressed, authorities identified two suspects in connection with the fatal shooting: 31-year-old Erik Farias Reyes and 35-year-old Juan Carlos Vasquez Hernandez. Farias Reyes was specifically implicated as the individual who fired a ten-millimeter handgun at Mora-Ontiveros, striking him in the upper back while he was a passenger in a car.
Following the incident, Farias Reyes was arrested and initially charged with second-degree murder. The court set a $3 million bail for the suspect, indicating the severity of the charges. However, as the legal process unfolded, Farias Reyes ultimately accepted a plea deal. On April 4, 2024, he pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter and unlawful possession of a firearm.
