On September 7, 2023, 37-year-old Daniel "Dan" Spaeth, a corrections officer at the Monroe Correctional Complex, was fatally shot near his home in Snohomish, Washington. The incident occurred around 7:45 p.m. in the 1600 block of South Machias Road. Spaeth and his wife, Allissa, were in their driveway attempting to slow traffic to allow deer to cross the road safely.
