On a tragic autumn morning, the life of 21-year-old Hispanic female Alyssia Precious Avalos was cut short in an act of violence. On October 19, 2023, in a house in Toppenish, Washington, Avalos, along with two other young people, was fatally shot. The incident, which unfolded around 5:00 a.m. on Pearne Street, also left a 21-year-old man in critical condition. The other victims who lost their lives were 13-year-old Isaac Corpuz and 18-year-old Altagracia Mancillas-Hernandez.
Remembered as having a beautiful soul, Alyssia was known for her caring nature and willingness to always put others before herself. She was a devoted mother to her young daughter, Serenity. Those who knew her recall her contagious laugh, funny jokes, and a radiant smile that could light up any room. Her unexpected death left her family, including her parents, Angela and Rigo, and her five siblings, heartbroken.
The investigation by the Toppenish Police Department determined that the shooting was a murder-suicide. The gunman was identified as 19-year-old Raymundo Lopez. After shooting four individuals, Lopez took his own life at the scene. Authorities stated that Lopez appeared to have acted alone and that there was no ongoing threat to the community following the incident.
Due to the suspect's death, no arrests were made in connection with the killings. The motive behind the devastating attack remains unknown to investigators. The Toppenish community was left to mourn the loss of three of its young members in this senseless act of violence.
