On a tragic afternoon, Amber Marie Rodriguez, a 31-year-old Hispanic female, lost her life in a violent act that unfolded outside the elementary school where she worked in West Richland, Washington. On April 22, 2024, the beloved paraeducator at William Wiley Elementary was shot and killed by her ex-husband, Elias Huizar, a 39-year-old former Yakima police officer. The devastating event occurred in front of one of her two young sons, shattering the peace of the school community.
The murder was the culmination of a history of domestic turmoil. Amber had repeatedly sought help from the courts, expressing grave fears for her and her children's safety. She described Huizar as controlling and unstable and had successfully obtained a protection order against him just months before her death after he was charged with rape. Her pleas for safety, however, were not enough to prevent the final, fatal confrontation. On the day of the shooting, after killing Amber, Huizar fled, triggering a wider investigation.
Authorities soon discovered another victim at Huizar's nearby home: his 17-year-old girlfriend, Angelica Santos, who had also been killed. Huizar then abducted the one-year-old son he shared with Santos, prompting a multi-state AMBER Alert. The manhunt came to a dramatic end in Oregon following a high-speed police chase. After crashing his vehicle, Huizar took his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound before he could be taken into custody. The infant in his car was rescued unharmed. In the aftermath, Amber's family has filed a significant claim against two police departments and two school districts, alleging a series of failures that they believe led to her preventable death.
