In the quiet community of Fall City, Washington, the life of a 7-year-old White / Caucasian girl named Katheryn Humiston was tragically cut short on October 21, 2024. Known affectionately as "Katie Bee" to her family, she was a vibrant child with a big heart and a contagious giggle. That morning, a series of gunshots shattered the peace of the Lake Alice neighborhood, leading to a horrific discovery inside the Humiston family home.
Katheryn, along with her parents, Mark and Sarah Humiston, and two of her brothers, 9-year-old Joshua and 13-year-old Benjamin, were found deceased, all having suffered fatal gunshot wounds.
The sole survivor of the massacre was Katheryn's 11-year-old sister. Despite being shot in the neck and hand, she bravely played dead until the assailant left her room. She then escaped through a window and ran to a neighbor's house to seek help, identifying her 15-year-old brother as the person who had shot the family. In a chilling twist, the 15-year-old suspect had also placed a 911 call, initially attempting to deceive authorities by claiming his 13-year-old brother was responsible for a murder-suicide. Investigators later determined that the scene had been staged to support this false narrative.
Authorities arrived to find a devastating scene and took the 15-year-old brother into custody without incident. He was subsequently charged with five counts of first-degree aggravated murder and one count of first-degree attempted murder. The case, which includes a domestic violence designation for each count, began in juvenile court. Prosecutors, however, have requested that the suspect be tried as an adult, a decision that will be determined in a future court hearing. The community has been left to grapple with the immense loss of the Humiston family, remembering Katheryn as a joyful and loving child who enjoyed singing, dancing, and playing outdoors with her siblings.
