On January 10, 2023, 24-year-old Amara Jones was fatally shot in the parking lot of Sunbury Plaza, located on South Sunbury Road near Westerville, Ohio. Blendon Township police officers responded to the scene around 5:35 p.m. and found Jones inside a vehicle with a gunshot wound to the head. She was transported to Mount Carmel St. Ann’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 6:22 p.m.
The suspect, 29-year-old Rodney Amir Perry, was identified shortly after the incident.
Perry contacted 911, admitting to the shooting, and fled the scene. Approximately eight hours later, he was apprehended in North Carolina, about 30 miles northeast of Charlotte. Perry was charged with murder and extradited to Ohio to face trial.
On October 27, 2024, Perry pleaded guilty to charges of murder, improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle, and tampering with evidence. Franklin County Judge Karen Held Phipps sentenced him to life in prison, with the possibility of parole after 18 years.
Amara Jones was born on July 25, 1998, in Columbus, Ohio, to parents Steve and Camika Jones.
