On February 22, 2023, at approximately midnight, Dayton police responded to a reported shooting in the 1900 block of Shaftesbury Road. Upon arrival, officers discovered 35-year-old Lafeon Quintez Hamilton with a gunshot wound; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspect, identified as 33-year-old Terrill Jerome Nelson, fled the scene in a stolen 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe. Utilizing recently installed Automated License Plate Readers (ALPRs), law enforcement tracked Nelson's vehicle.
When officers attempted a traffic stop, Nelson led them on a high-speed pursuit, reaching speeds up to 100 mph. Police deployed tire deflation devices and executed a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuver to apprehend him.
Nelson was subsequently indicted on multiple charges, including two counts each of murder and felonious assault, one count of grand theft (motor vehicle), and two counts of failure to comply with the order or signal of a police officer. The murder and felonious assault charges carry three-year firearm specifications, which could extend his sentence if convicted. He remains in custody at the Montgomery County Jail on a $1 million bond.
According to authorities, Hamilton and Nelson were acquainted, indicating the incident was not a random act of violence. The swift apprehension of Nelson was facilitated by the ALPR technology, underscoring its effectiveness in enhancing public safety.
