On the evening of March 3, 2023, Rusty Steele, a 40-year-old resident of Lisbon, Ohio, was fatally shot outside a residence on West Spruce Street. Steele had been visiting his girlfriend when an unknown individual knocked on the door, claiming their vehicle had broken down and requested assistance. Demonstrating his characteristic willingness to help others, Steele went outside to start his own vehicle to provide a jump.
At that moment, Michael Blower, 31, of Salem, Ohio, approached and shot Steele in the chest. Steele managed to exit his vehicle but collapsed in the street and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation revealed that Blower and Steele had been involved in a dispute earlier that evening, primarily concerning Blower's wife, with whom Steele had children. Blower orchestrated the plan to lure Steele outside, enlisting the help of Christopher Mills, 43, of Washingtonville, Ohio. Mills drove Blower to and from the scene and played a role in getting Steele to exit the residence. Following the incident, Blower turned himself in to authorities and confessed to the shooting.
Legal proceedings ensued, resulting in significant sentences for both individuals involved. In January 2024, Blower pleaded guilty to murder and a firearm specification. He was sentenced to 18 years to life in prison, with parole eligibility after 18 years. In March 2024, Mills pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit murder and obstructing justice. He received a sentence of 13 years in prison for his involvement in the crime.
Rusty Steele was remembered by family and friends as a loving and caring individual, always willing to help those in need. His untimely death left a profound impact on the community, especially his teenage daughters, who now face a future without their father's presence.
