On February 13, 2024, 14-year-old Lauralye Sterling was found deceased from a gunshot wound in her Lima, Ohio, home. A freshman at Lima Senior High School, Lauralye was remembered for her love of drawing, social media, and playing basketball with friends.
Authorities arrested 18-year-old Malik Dennis in connection with her death. Investigations revealed that Dennis had been robbed by two juveniles inside the Greenlawn Avenue residence shortly before the incident.
In response, he allegedly scaled an exterior television antenna, fired a shot through a window, and struck Lauralye in the chest. Following his arrest, Dennis confessed to the shooting and penned an apology expressing remorse.
Dennis was indicted on charges including aggravated murder, murder, felonious assault, improperly discharging a firearm into a habitation, and tampering with evidence. In November 2024, he pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and improperly discharging a firearm into a habitation, with an agreed-upon sentence of a mandatory minimum of 25 years in prison.
Additionally, 17-year-old Cardarius Burns was charged with complicity and other felonies related to the robbery preceding the shooting. Initially held in juvenile detention, Burns's case was later transferred to adult court. He pleaded not guilty to charges including aggravated robbery with a firearm specification, felonious assault with a firearm specification, grand theft of a firearm, and two counts of having weapons under disability.
The tragic loss of Lauralye deeply affected the Lima community, highlighting the devastating impact of violence on young lives.
