On July 16, 2024, at approximately 3:14 a.m., Dayton police responded to reports of gunfire near South Conover and West Fifth Streets. Upon arrival, officers discovered 37-year-old John Idell Favors lying on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound to the head. Despite immediate first aid efforts, Favors was pronounced dead at the scene.
Shortly thereafter, a 33-year-old man arrived at a local hospital with non-life-threatening gunshot injuries, believed to be connected to the same incident.
Additionally, two women in a bullet-riddled sedan flagged down officers, indicating the severity of the shooting.
The shooting occurred outside an alleged after-hours establishment, commonly referred to as a "boot joint," known for serving alcohol illegally. Residents reported frequent disturbances at this location, with one neighbor describing the scene as reminiscent of the "Wild Wild West."
As of now, there have been no arrests related to the incident, and authorities have not publicly identified any suspects. The Dayton Police Department's Homicide Unit continues to investigate and urges anyone with information to contact them or provide anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers.
Favors was remembered as an admired entrepreneur with diverse business interests nationwide. He was a Freemason who designed Masonic regalia, owned real estate, and was a cancer survivor known for his generosity and support for others facing challenges. He is survived by his fiancée of 17 years, Shawan Herring, and their two children.
