Christopher Andexler, a 41-year-old White man, was fatally shot during a traffic altercation in Valley View, Ohio, on the morning of August 22, 2024. The incident took place just before 10 a.m. on the Brecksville Road overpass above Granger Road.
Police received multiple calls about a man lying in the street near a gray work van. Witnesses reported that Andexler and the driver of a white minivan had pulled their vehicles over, exited them, and engaged in an argument before shots were
fired. Emergency responders transported Andexler to a nearby hospital, but he died from his injuries.
The white minivan fled the scene but was found a short time later in the neighboring community of Brooklyn Heights. Authorities said the van crashed on Schaaf Road due to a mechanical issue and then caught fire. A 28-year-old man, a 28-year-old woman, and their two young children, both under the age of five, had been inside but got out of the vehicle unharmed.
Responding officers took the man and woman into custody. A firearm was recovered at the scene of the crash. The couple’s children were placed in the care of Child Protective Services. Later the same day, prosecutors determined there was not enough evidence to hold the couple, and they were released.
The investigation continued over the following months. Authorities announced that their initial findings indicated Andexler had been the aggressor in the confrontation. The case was ultimately presented to the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Self-Defense Review Committee. In December 2024, the prosecutor’s office announced it would not pursue charges against the 28-year-old man who shot Andexler. The office stated that after a review of the evidence, it could not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the shooter was not acting in self-defense, a burden the state is required to meet under Ohio law.
