On a summer afternoon in Albuquerque, New Mexico, an act of kindness cost a man his life. Kevin Moore, a 52-year-old White man, had gone to help his nephew, who was stranded with a flat tire. The incident took place around 2:50 p.m. on June 14, 2024, in the 600 block of Coal Avenue SE, near the intersection with Walter Street.
While Moore was helping his nephew, a friend of the nephew, 19-year-old Alex Trujillo, was also at the scene.
According to witnesses, Trujillo walked up and threw a rock through the window of a nearby car. Moore confronted Trujillo and told him to stop. In response, Trujillo pulled out a handgun and fired four shots, striking Moore. Albuquerque police officers arrived to find Moore on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds. He died at the scene.
The Albuquerque Police Department launched a homicide investigation. After fleeing the area, Trujillo reportedly told his grandmother that he had killed a man he did not know, claiming the man had "pulled out a knife on him." Investigators, however, found no knife at the scene of the shooting. Trujillo was later arrested at a mobile home park in Southeast Albuquerque, and police recovered a gun.
Alex Trujillo was charged with murder and tampering with evidence. He was held in custody until his trial, during which he claimed he had acted in self-defense. In May 2026, a Bernalillo County jury found Trujillo, then 21, guilty of second-degree murder and tampering with evidence for the killing of Kevin Moore. As of that month, a sentencing hearing had not yet been scheduled.
