In the late summer of 2023, a young man's life was tragically cut short in Independence, Kentucky, over a dispute that, by all accounts, had nothing to do with him. Seth Robert Burns, a 23-year-old male, was shot and killed on August 25, 2023, in an act of violence that stemmed from a social media argument between two families. He was a father, son, and brother, known for his kind and thoughtful nature.
The conflict began with an online argument, reportedly over parenting skills, that escalated to a deadly in-person confrontation. Amanda Turner, a 39-year-old mother, drove her children to a residence on Archer Court with the intent of engaging in a physical fight. She was aware that at least two of her sons were armed. Upon their arrival, the situation quickly turned violent.
Seth Burns, who was at his girlfriend's home, went outside and was shot. The fatal shot was fired by Amanda Turner's 17-year-old son, Jackie Turner. Following the shooting, the Turner family fled the scene. Burns was rushed to a nearby fire station and then airlifted to a hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation led to the arrest of multiple members of the Turner family. Jackie Turner, who was a juvenile at the time of the shooting, pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to 30 years in prison. His mother, Amanda Turner, who instigated the confrontation by driving her family to the location, pleaded guilty to facilitation of murder and other charges, receiving a sentence of 12 and a half years. Another son, Xxavion Turner, was acquitted of murder but convicted on two counts of tampering with evidence and sentenced to four years in prison. Two of Amanda Turner's daughters also faced charges related to the incident. Family and friends of Seth Burns remember him as a protector who died while trying to defend his girlfriend and her friend from a senseless attack.
