In a tragic turn of events stemming from a landlord-tenant dispute, 86-year-old Earl Morrison Coffey, a male resident of Columbia, Kentucky, was fatally shot at his home on March 23, 2024. A U.S. Army veteran, Coffey was a respected member of the Adair County Cattlemen's Association who enjoyed farming and spending time with his family. His life was cut short in what authorities have described as a senseless act of violence.
The incident unfolded on a Saturday morning at Coffey's
residence on Old Montpelier Road. Joseph South, a 57-year-old man who was reportedly being evicted from a property rented from Coffey, arrived at his landlord's home and allegedly fired multiple rounds into the house. At the time of the shooting, four other individuals were inside the residence with Coffey. The barrage of gunfire resulted in Coffey sustaining fatal injuries.
Law enforcement was promptly called to the scene. The Adair County Sheriff's Office located Joseph South at the residence and detained him. Following an investigation by the Kentucky State Police, South was arrested and charged with one count of murder and four counts of first-degree wanton endangerment, due to the presence of other individuals in the home at the time of the shooting. South was subsequently lodged in the Adair County Regional Jail.
