On January 8, 2023, Kade Riley Nichol, a 27-year-old resident of Prineville, Oregon, was fatally shot at the Wild Horse Mesa Apartments. The incident occurred around 4:35 pm when Nichol, who was intoxicated and distraught over the recent death of a close friend, went to the apartment of Darrien Ruiz, a 29-year-old man with whom he had a prior friendship that ended in October 2022 due to a falling out related to Ruiz’s relationship with Nichol’s wife.
