On the evening of March 9, 2024, in Corvallis, Oregon, the life of a 34-year-old Black woman, Vonetta Johnson, was tragically cut short. Responding to a report of a shooting at approximately 7:21 p.m., police arrived at a residence on NW Highland Drive to a devastating scene. Inside, they discovered Vonetta deceased on the kitchen floor from an apparent gunshot wound to the head.
The tragedy was compounded by the discovery of her younger sister, 24-year-old Ciara Page, who was also suffering from serious gunshot wounds. Miraculously, Vonetta's two minor children, ages 14 and 10, were also in the home at the time but were physically unharmed.
As medical personnel rushed Ciara to the hospital, she was able to provide crucial information to the authorities, identifying the suspect as Vonetta's 53-year-old boyfriend, Jerry Bruce Mitchell Sr. of Long Beach, California. An ongoing argument between the couple is believed to have escalated to the fatal shooting. With this information, law enforcement was able to quickly identify the vehicle Mitchell was driving and track his movements. A temporary warrant was issued as he was tracked traveling south near Medford.
The pursuit of Mitchell crossed state lines into California, where the California Highway Patrol located him. Mitchell attempted to evade capture, leading police on a high-speed chase that reached speeds of over 100 miles per hour and lasted for approximately 45 to 50 minutes. The chase finally came to an end in the city of Mt. Shasta, where Mitchell was taken into custody shortly after midnight. He was initially held at the Siskiyou County Jail pending extradition to Oregon.
In the aftermath of this violent event, Jerry Bruce Mitchell Sr. faced a series of charges, including Murder in the First Degree Constituting Domestic Violence, Attempted Murder in the First Degree, Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, and Animal Abuse in the First Degree. Just over ten months later, on January 23, 2025, Mitchell pleaded guilty to the charges. He was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of release after a minimum of 30 years. The resolution of the legal proceedings brought a measure of closure to the family and friends of Vonetta Johnson, a mother, sister, and daughter whose life was violently taken.
