On the morning of July 21, 2023, Alvaro J. Andrade, a 33-year-old Hispanic male, was found with gunshot wounds while sitting in the driver's seat of his Jeep Grand Cherokee. The vehicle was parked in the driveway of a residence at 188 Winthrop Street in Taunton, Massachusetts. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene around 7:40 a.m. following reports of shots fired.
Andrade was quickly transported to Morton Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased shortly after 9:00 a.m.
The investigation into the death of Alvaro J. Andrade swiftly led to a suspect. Later that same day, 36-year-old Dustin Humanes of East Taunton was arrested in the nearby city of Fall River. Authorities located Humanes after it was discovered he had checked into St. Anne's Hospital under a false name. Humanes was subsequently charged with murder, carrying an illegal firearm, and carrying a loaded illegal firearm.
According to court documents, a witness who was present during the incident told investigators that Humanes had become upset with Andrade, accusing him of being involved in a prior incident where Humanes had been shot. The witness claimed that Humanes then shot Andrade multiple times inside the Jeep. In his defense, Humanes asserted that he acted in self-defense, claiming he saw a gun in Andrade's waistband and feared for his safety. In June 2025, a jury found Dustin Humanes not guilty of murder but convicted him on a charge of Possession of a Large Capacity Firearm. He was sentenced to serve three to five years in prison.
