In the summer of 2023, the life of Michael Steven Parks, a 62-year-old Black / African American man, was brought to a violent and abrupt end. On the evening of July 28th, events transpired within a residence on Marshall Street in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, that would culminate in his tragic death. That night, Fitchburg police officers were dispatched to the home around 9:25 p.m. following a report of a shooting.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered Mr. Parks suffering from a gunshot wound. He was quickly transported to a nearby hospital in a desperate attempt to save his life, but his injuries proved to be too severe, and he was pronounced dead. The initial response by local law enforcement soon grew into a full-scale homicide investigation, led by the Fitchburg Police Department in conjunction with Massachusetts State Police Detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney's Office.
The investigation led authorities to two men, Thomas E. Martin, 45, of Fitchburg, and Christian Collins, 37, of Worcester. Their efforts resulted in the apprehension of both individuals. In early August, Martin and Collins were arraigned in Fitchburg District Court on charges of murder and home invasion, where they were ordered to be held without bail. Later, a Worcester County Grand Jury handed down indictments against both men, moving their case to the Worcester Superior Court. The charges were extensive, including murder, home invasion, armed assault in a dwelling, assault with a dangerous weapon, and possession of a firearm without an FID card. Thomas Martin faced an additional indictment for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
