On the evening of April 6, 2023, tragedy struck in Calumet City, Illinois, when 5-year-old African American boy Kentrell Pouncey was fatally shot inside his home on Paxton Avenue. Authorities responded to reports of a child being shot at approximately 9 p.m. Upon arrival, officers discovered Kentrell with a gunshot wound to the head and immediately began life-saving measures. He was transported to Advocate Children's Hospital in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead just before 10:15 p.m.
