On the evening of April 6, 2023, tragedy struck in Calumet City, Illinois, when 5-year-old African American boy Kentrell Pouncey was fatally shot inside his home on Paxton Avenue. Authorities responded to reports of a child being shot at approximately 9 p.m. Upon arrival, officers discovered Kentrell with a gunshot wound to the head and immediately began life-saving measures.
He was transported to Advocate Children's Hospital in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead just before 10:15 p.m.
At the time of the shooting, Kentrell was at home with his mother and three siblings, all under the age of 15. Preliminary investigations revealed that a firearm had been brought into the residence by a family member who had found it elsewhere, unbeknownst to Kentrell’s mother. However, authorities did not immediately determine how the gun was discharged or who fired the fatal shot. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office later confirmed Kentrell’s identity.
Calumet City officials, including Mayor Thaddeus Jones, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the young boy. The mayor, who personally knew the family, comforted Kentrell’s mother in the aftermath of the tragedy. City spokesperson Sean Howard emphasized the innocence of the grieving mother, while Alderman DeAndre Tillman shared his personal distress over the incident, noting that his own nephew attended the same school district as Kentrell.
In response to the shooting, Calumet City Police Chief Kevin Kolosh urged parents to have serious discussions with their children about firearm safety, stressing the importance of instructing them never to touch a gun and to notify a responsible adult if they encounter one. The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services was notified, and Kentrell’s siblings were placed with other family members.
As of the latest updates, authorities were still investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including identifying who fired the weapon. No arrests had been reported at that time. The community remained shaken by the loss of the young African American boy, and officials continued to stress the importance of firearm safety to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
