Martin Pegues, a 47-year-old resident of Aurora, Illinois, was fatally shot on October 5, 2023. The incident occurred in the backyard of a home located in the 100 block of North Calhoun Street, a neighborhood west of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park. Shortly before noon, city dispatchers received several 911 calls reporting shots fired and a gunshot victim. Upon arrival, police found Pegues suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
He was transported to Rush Copley Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 12:43 p.m..
The investigation into Pegues' death was conducted by the Aurora Police Department and the Kane County Coroner's Office. Initially, officers searched the immediate area for a suspect but were unable to locate anyone at the scene.
On November 25, 2023, a significant development occurred in the case when Derrick D. Jordan, 47, of Aurora, was arrested in connection with Pegues' death. Jordan was apprehended after a police chase that began in Aurora and ended in DeKalb. Detectives had located Jordan in a car near the 1400 block of North Farnsworth Avenue in Aurora. When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, Jordan fled, leading to a pursuit. He was eventually taken into custody by the DeKalb Police Department.
Jordan was charged with multiple counts, including first-degree murder, aggravated battery, unlawful use of a weapon by a convicted felon, and two counts of aggravated fleeing and eluding. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, and authorities continue to seek information from the public.
