On December 2, 2023, a fatal shooting occurred at the Hilton Suites located at 10 Drury Lane in Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois. The victim, identified as 33-year-old Calvin Truitt, was found with two gunshot wounds to his back and side area when police responded to a call of shots fired around 8:15 p.m..
The incident began with a verbal altercation between Truitt and Latrice Phillips, a 51-year-old woman from Naperville, at the hotel pool. Following the altercation, Truitt and his group left the pool area and got on an elevator. Phillips allegedly followed them and got on the elevator as well. When the elevator stopped on the seventh floor, a fight broke out, and Phillips pulled out a handgun and fired three times, striking Truitt.
Truitt was immediately transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead due to his injuries. Phillips fled the scene and returned to her hotel room, where she was taken into custody a short time later without incident. During her arrest, authorities recovered a Taurus 9 mm handgun in a holster from her waistband.
Latrice Phillips has been charged with one count of first-degree murder in connection with Truitt's death. Her pre-trial release was denied by Judge Joshua Dieden, and she is scheduled to appear in court for arraignment on January 4, 2024.
The investigation involved the Oakbrook Terrace Police Department, along with the DuPage County Metropolitan Emergency Response and Investigative Team (M.E.R.I.T.), the DuPage County Coroner's Office, and the DuPage County State's Attorney's office. The shooting was described as an isolated event, and there was no danger to the community.
DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Oakbrook Terrace Chief of Police Casey Calvello commended the prompt response and thorough investigation by law enforcement, which led to the filing of first-degree murder charges within 24 hours of the murder. They also extended their condolences to the family and friends of Calvin Truitt.
