On August 26, 2024, a fatal shooting occurred in the 22000 block of Governors Highway, an area near Matteson and Richton Park, Illinois. The victim, 22-year-old José Moran-Padilla, was involved in a verbal dispute outside a residence when the incident took place.
At approximately 8 p.m., Cook County Sheriff's Police responded to a call reporting the shooting. Upon arrival, officers found Moran-Padilla unresponsive with multiple gunshot wounds.
He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation by the Cook County Sheriff's Office revealed that the shooting occurred during the verbal argument, with the offender shooting Moran-Padilla in the back and right arm. A semi-automatic handgun and two firearm magazines were recovered from the scene. The suspect, a 15-year-old male from Matteson, was taken into custody without incident.
On August 27, 2024, the Cook County State's Attorney's Office approved a charge of first-degree murder against the juvenile. The suspect appeared for his initial hearing at Juvenile Court, where a judge ordered him to be held at the Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center.
