On January 1, 2024, 41-year-old Leceddrick Danielle Mitchell was fatally shot at a New Year's Eve party on Danny Street in Hazlehurst, Georgia. Earlier that evening, Mitchell had an argument with 24-year-old Kaniya Maxwell Fletcher. Following the dispute, Fletcher coordinated with 25-year-old Kiel Smith and 18-year-old Brad Smith, both from Lumber City, to come to the party. Upon their arrival, Kiel and Brad Smith shot and killed Mitchell.
