In the small city of Pembroke, Georgia, a tragedy unfolded that cut short the life of a young boy. On May 10, 2024, 14-year-old Michael JMai Palmer, a male, was found unresponsive inside an apartment in the Miller Homes complex located off Dubois Street. Responding to a 911 call, Pembroke Police Department officers discovered the young teenager had been shot.
Michael was pronounced dead at the scene, and his body was subsequently taken to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab for an autopsy. His mother recounted the devastating moment she found her son in a puddle of blood with a wound to the back of his head in a bedroom of their apartment.
The investigation into Michael's death was quickly taken over by the GBI at the request of the local police department. Their work led to the identification and arrest of two suspects. The first arrest occurred on Sunday, May 12, 2024, when 16-year-old Israel Lee Williams of Pembroke was taken into custody. He was charged with murder and booked into the Savannah Regional Youth Detention Center. The investigation continued, leading to a second arrest nearly nine months later. On Wednesday, February 5, 2025, 19-year-old Emmanuel Lee Williams was apprehended in Coffee County, Tennessee, during a traffic stop by the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
Emmanuel Lee Williams faced a string of serious charges in connection with Michael's death, including Felony Murder, Aggravated Assault, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, and False Statements. Following his arrest in Tennessee, he was held at the Coffee County Jail awaiting extradition to Georgia. Michael was an eighth-grade student in Bryan County, and his death left his family, including his mother and younger brother, and the wider community in shock. The case file, once the investigation is fully complete, is slated to be handed over to the Atlantic District Attorney's Office for review and prosecution.
