In what was initially reported as a car accident, 56-year-old Sabrina Kay Carson was found deceased inside her vehicle on the morning of May 24, 2024, in Stonecrest, Georgia. DeKalb County police responded to a call around 7:30 a.m. and discovered a car that had struck a light pole and a power box off an access road near a Walmart on Mall Parkway. Inside the vehicle, they found Carson in the driver's seat with multiple gunshot wounds.

Originally from Michigan, Carson had moved to the Atlanta area about two decades prior to her death. Her family described her as a kind and generous person who would give the shirt off her back to someone in need. She was a mother and grandmother, and her sudden and violent death left her family devastated.

The investigation quickly shifted from a traffic accident to a homicide. A witness at the scene reported seeing a man fleeing from the vehicle after the crash. Family members, including Carson's nephew, Brian Johnson, immediately suspected her boyfriend, telling authorities that he lived with her and was seen leaving with her that morning.

On June 2, 2024, DeKalb County police arrested Kjiar Prather in connection with Carson's death. Prather, identified as Carson's boyfriend, was charged with malice murder and is being held in the DeKalb County Jail. Witnesses who saw Prather running from the car were instrumental in his identification and subsequent arrest. While police have not officially confirmed the specifics of their relationship, family members indicated that Carson was involved with a younger man whom she was helping with housing and employment.
