On April 9, 2023, Jamal Kareme Watson, a 38-year-old resident of Orlando, Florida, lost his life in a mass shooting near Poppy Park in the Carver Shores neighborhood. The incident occurred on Easter Sunday evening, around 6:50 p.m., when officers were called to the scene.
Watson was one of three victims who died as a result of the shooting. The other two victims were identified as Tristan Morgan, 16, and Patriza Deterville, 33.
Two other adults were also injured in the incident, with one listed in critical condition and the other suffering non-life-threatening injuries.
Watson, born on August 6, 1984, in St. John Antigua, had spent most of his life in Orlando. He was a beloved son, brother, father, and friend to many, and his presence had a significant impact on the community. He is survived by his mother, Maxine Watson; his brothers Antonio Delugo, Martin Francis, and Lenny Monsanto; his sisters Monee Francis and Latoyah Watson; and his two daughters Jayda Watson and Ja’nia Watson, among other family members and close friends.
The shooting is believed to have occurred during or after an Easter egg hunt at the park, following some kind of argument, although the exact circumstances leading to the shooting have not been detailed by the police. The victims, including Watson, were reportedly caught in the crossfire while sitting outside a residence near the park.
As of the latest reports, no arrests have been made, and the police are not currently looking for any suspects. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, with authorities urging anyone with information to come forward to help bring justice to the victims and their families.
A private memorial service was held to honor Watson's life at the New Church of Faith on May 5, 2023, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., reflecting the deep impact he had on those who knew him.
