Melvin Samuel Cockroft III, a 10-year-old boy, tragically lost his life on September 25, 2023, in North Miami, Florida. The incident occurred at his home located at 14050 Northwest Fifth Place. According to reports, the shooting was accidental and involved a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The accident happened shortly after 8 p.m. on Monday evening.
A 911 dispatcher received a call indicating that a gun had fallen from a closet and discharged, resulting in the 10-year-old being shot accidentally. Despite immediate medical attention, Melvin was rushed to the Ryder Trauma Center but did not survive.
The firearm involved in the incident was registered to Melvin's father, who was present at the home during the time of the accident. North Miami Police Chief Cherise Gause stated that it was too early to determine if any charges would be filed, as the police were still in communication with the state attorney’s office.
