The peace of Joseph's life was shattered on that June evening when he and his wife, Gail, were fatally shot inside their residence. The events of that night unfolded into a grim family tragedy that also saw their son and his wife narrowly escape with their lives. The couple's grandchildren, who lived with them, were suddenly displaced, losing not only their grandparents but also their home and the stable life they had known. The community was left in shock by the violent end to the lives of two of its members.
In the aftermath of the killings, a suspect was identified, leading to an hours-long manhunt. The individual taken into custody was Mia Bailey, the 28-year-old daughter of Joseph and Gail. Mia, who had legally changed her name and gender the previous year, was subsequently arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated murder, one count of attempted aggravated murder, and multiple other felonies. According to court documents, Mia Bailey expressed no remorse for the killings and stated an intent to kill her parents. The Washington County Attorney's Office has filed formal charges against Mia Bailey, and while the case is being prosecuted, the death penalty is not being sought.
